At the meeting of the Council of the WRAC Association on 10 February 2016 amendments to the Area structure, and allocation of Branches to Areas, were agreed. Full details are attached.

 

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Colonel (Retired) Eleanor Bowles on 04 February 2016 at the age of 94. Eleanor enlisted in the ATS in 1942 and was commissioned in 1944. She retired from the Army in 1978, her final posting was as Comdt WRAC College. Eleanor was a Life Vice President of the WRAC Association and served as Chairman of Council for many years.

Her funeral will be held at 15:45 on Wednesday 24 February 2016 at Aldershot Crematorium, followed by refreshments at the Army Golf Club, Aldershot.

It is with sadness that we announce the death, on 30 January 2016, of Chelsea In-Pensioner WO2 Win Phillips. Win enlisted in the ATS in 1948 then transfered to the WRAC on its formation in 1949, she served for 22 years. In 2009, at the age of 82, she joined the Royal Hospital Chelsea, becoming one of the first female Chelsea In-Pensioners. Her funeral will be held at the Royal Hospital Chelsea on 17 February at 14.00.

Congratulations to Barbara Kemp (age 91) of Plungar, Nottingham on her recent presentation of France’s highest award, the Légion d’Honneur, for her role in the country’s liberation during the Second World War whilst serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). 

 

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Lt Gen Sir Christopher Wallace KBE DL on 7th January 2015 at the age of 73. General Wallace was commissioned in to the Royal Green Jackets in 1962 and retired in 1999 from the post of Chief Joint Ops Northwood. He was a great supporter of the Adjutant General's Corps, of which the WRAC is an antecedent corps. A Memorial Service will be held, probably in April 2016.

Congratulations to Dame Joanna Kelleher (nee Henderson) DBE who celebrates her 100th birthday on 24 December 2015.  She enlisted in the ATS in 1941 and rose to the rank of Brigadier, serving as DWRAC 1964-67. Dame Joanna is a Life Vice President of the WRAC Association.

On Sunday 12 June 2016 The Mall will be transformed into a street party to celebrate HM The Queen's patronage of over 300 charities and 300 other organisations on the occasion of her 90th birthday. This not-for-profit event will see over 10,000 people enjoying a hamper style lunch at tables positioned along the full length of The Mall. More details can be found at The Patron's Lunch.  

HM The Queen is Patron of the WRAC Association, we will therefore be able to purchase a small number of tickets which we would like to make available to our members via a raffle. Raffle tickets will be distributed in the next edition of Lioness (early 2016) and the draw will be made at the WRAC Association AGM at the Victory Services Club, London on Saturday 12 March 2016. 

Over 110 members of the WRAC Association participated in the National Service of Remembrance at The Cenotaph in London. Former ATS members Betty Herschel and Jessica Denby both appeared in interviews as part of the BBC coverage.12191541 935295346547993 1581800570707025338 n 

On 5th November 2015 members of the WRAC Association attended the annual Opening Service of the Field of Remembrance Westminster Abbey.

Up to 3 spaces (for WRAC Association members only) have become available take part in this Parade (to make up a contingent of 8 plus Standard). Applicants must be fit and able to march at full pace and would need to report by 0930, travel at own expense, participate at own risk.
